Email Subject Lines

Subject lines are a critical element in the battle to improve email open rates. A poorly constructed subject line can make or break a marketing campaign. Of course the email body is important, but you really should put a great deal of time, research and ideally A/B testing, into optimising your subject line.

Length is important

For two reasons. Firstly because your reader is only going to devote two or perhaps three seconds reading your subject line, before deciding to open it or not. Secondly because in mail clients and especially on a smartphone, a subject line gets truncated.

The personal touch

An average office / lab bench based scientist is typically receiving between 50 and 100 emails to their inbox each day. If you don’t stand out, you won’t get picked out from the crowd. Personalisation of email subject lines has been shown to make the single biggest difference in the overall success of an email marketing capaign.
