Stem cell research for dogs

Scientists working at Osaka Prefecture University  have refined a new method to kick start stem cell generation from the blood samples of dogs. The hope is veterinarians will treat or even reverse previously incurable conditions in dogs using these new canine stem cell research techniques.

Stem cell research has made much progress in humans, however comparatively little research has been done in the veterinary market.  The Osaka University team set about to improve the situation.

We successfully established an efficient and easy generation method of canine iPSCs from peripheral blood mononuclear cells” explained Dr. Hatoya who added that in the near future, “it may be possible to perform regenerative medicinal treatments in dogs.“. With this new capability comes the possibility to use stem cell treatments more widely, opening exciting new opportunities.

A few stem cell based treatments are already available, such as:

  • Osteoarthritis (arthritis)
  • Selected tendon injuries such as shoulder tendon, Achilles tendon.
  • Some cartilage joint diseases such as osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) and elbow dysplasia.

The hope now is to increase this list. Further research is also possible, to investigate if the novel techniques developed by the team could be incorporated back into the human stem cell research efforts.

Stem cells are one of the many research areas Marketwise supports, with a dedicated email list available.
