A new hope
Psoriasis is a serious disease, that impacts the daily lives of millions worldwide. Its root cause is still not fully understood, but likely involves changes to the immune system. Psoriasis treatment depends on the severity, but there is currently no cure.
Psoriasis sufferers actually produce skin too quickly. Normally, skin cells are replaced every 3 or 4 weeks, but for those with psoriasis, this is reduced to every 5 to 7 days. These extra skin cells appear as the tell tale red, itchy patches of skin.
Current treatments
Mild conditions can be treated with Vitamins and simple creams, more serious outbreaks can require steroid injections. Steroids are not a long term solution and often only bring temporary relief.
The Gut-Skin Axis – you are what you eat?
New research is focusing on the role of gut health and its impact on skin conditions, that offers hope for a new psoriasis treatment. In this research, natural bacteria are introduced into the gut (orally), that help to restore the balance of the gut microbiome. By re-balancing the microbiome, the gut can better regulate the absorption of metabolites and maintain a healthy intestinal barrier.
Trial results
The creators of the new supplement, AxisBiotix ran a trial which reported the following results.
